Eph. 5:33
Ephes. 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Me and my dad we talking a few days back, and he was telling me about this verse. One thing that he said he had learned through many years is that men and women seem to want different things, more than others, compared to each other.
Men - more than else, desire most to have the affirmation that they are respected.
Women - more than else, desire most to have the affirmation that they are loved.
Of course men want love and women want respect as well, he said. But in the man's mind, respect IS love, meaning that he wont feel loved when there is an absence of respect. And in the woman's mind she feels respected and honored and satisfied when her husband loves her outwardly as he is supposed to.
In response, I said to my dad, "hmm." (he sometimes likes to talk on and on, and change subjects by himself, and so forth, while the other person is listening. I've learnt just to keep quiet and let him talk, cause I'm sure there are some very good nuggest of wisdom to aquire) I thought that that was an interesting exposition and application of that verse, though the method is very inferential. In any case, I know that God, from other passages, has made man and woman complementary to each other with different roles, and therefore differnt desires and needs.

I am amazed often at the wisdom of older men and women.... but especially those men and women who have been walking with God for many years....
I could not have expressed the ideas that your dad did any clearer. These are so true.
Now, here is the keystone for our JOY... we will find MOST joy when we seek our spouse's joy; meaning, we are most happy when our spouse is happy. This is not natural because we have fallen and are sinful; but, we will be happy when our wife is happy BECAUSE she has been loved by us. Likewise, godly wives will find their most joy when they seek to find joy in their husbands and that happens when they affirm their husband's leadership and headship authority and the husband as a result, is happy.
